Ene 04: Low Carbon Design (Int NC 2016)

How to calculate the ENE 04 credit

The aim of the criteria is to recognise and encourage the appropriate use of local energy generation from renewable sources.
One Click LCA helps you to achieve one credit for the ENE 04 LZC technologies: in order to achieve the credit, you must first fulfill the first credit of the assessment criteria.

For the ENE04 you must use the 'LCA for building elements (BREEAM SE/NOR)' tool.

BREEAM requirements for two credits
  1. Criteria 1 to 3 are achieved.
  2. The feasibility study includes a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the carbon impact of the chosen LZC system(s), accounting for its embodied carbon emissions and operational carbon savings and emissions. The LCA study must be completed in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 Environmental Management Life Cycle Assessment – Requirements and Guidelines.
  3. The LCA must consider a 60 year period (a typical assumption for the life of a building) and any necessary replacements/maintenance requirements within this period.

There are different options how to calculate the credit

Option 1. Your LZC technology will be an additional installation to reduce e.g. electricity impacts:

  1. Insert your LZC technology in the Building element materials input form (under the question 'Building element materials'), add quantity, service life of the system (or system elements separately), and transport distance to the building site
  2. Provide description to the 'Building element and solution description' what will be included in your report
  3. Set your calculation period to 60 years
  4. Fill in the question form 'Building element impacts', where you need to input building element impacts at construction site (construction process impacts), additional transportation (if relevant) and impacts of energy and water use, which can be positive and/or negative.
  5. For the Building element impacts form you need to enter at least the relevant waste production (packaging of the technology)
If your LZC is a heat pump, enter its electricity consumption as positive value and heating consumption as negative value.

Option 2. Your LZC technology is optionally an alternative for conventional heating system (e.g. ground source heat pump):

  1. Fill in the information about your LZC technology as guided in the first option
  2. Fill in the information about your conventional heating system to the new design (create a new design on the project main page by clicking '+Add a design').
  3. Compare designs in the results page (click 'Compare designs'), to demonstrate how the environmental impacts will be reduced. If the comparison doesn’t show improvement, the installation of the LZC over service life of 60 years is not justified. Explain your findings in the documentation. One Click LCA enables you to try out different options. The easiest way to compare different LZC technologies is to create a new design and compare results. In this way you can find out the most optimal solution.
